 Dr. Aboussafy provides a full range of assessment services to adults, as well as evidenced-based cognitive-behavioural and other treatments for a variety of psychological conditions and problem behaviour.
Dr. Aboussafy provides many types of assessment services for adults. These include diagnostic assessments which can include opinions on prognosis, causality, rating of psychological impairment or disability, and treatment and rehabilitation planning. He also conducts psychovocational assessments which include tests of cognitive ability and academic skills, learning disability, fitness to work and substance use assessments.
In treatment, Dr. Aboussafy uses a variety of brief solution focused methods and cognitive behavioural techniques to work with people dealing with: anxiety (for example, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, OCD, phobias, or acute stress); sleep problems; mood disorders (such as depression); chronic pain; anger, conflict and distressed communication in relationships; substance use; compulsive or other problem behaviour; chronic disease; and those wanting to make positive lifestyle or health behaviour changes (such as quitting smoking).
Training, Education and Experience Dr. David Aboussafy is a Registered Psychologist(College of Psychologists of B.C. #01475) who earned a PhD in Clinical Psychology from McGill University, Montreal, where he held a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship. He completed a Clinical Psychology Internship at Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. Dr. Aboussafy subsequently did a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Psychology at Vancouver General Hospital, and then a CIHR-funded Postdoctoral fellowship at the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Medicine. He has worked as a full-time Psychology Advisor for WorkSafe B.C. and has received specialized training in chronic pain evaluation and assessment of psychological permanent functional impairment. He also earned an Honors Psychology degree from Simon Fraser University, where he earned the College of Psychologists of BC Gold Medal for top graduate in Psychology in 1993.
Dr. Aboussafy was a Clinical Coordinator at UBC for two years and has served on the board of the BC Psychological Association and as Chair of the Health Section of the Canadian Psychological Association. He has also worked as a patient outcomes research manager and senior psychometrician for an international health research consultancy. He has developed treatment programs for Health Canada, the B.C. Ministry of Health and Vancouver Coastal Health. He has recently co-authored a Health Canada Best Practice report as well as numerous peer reviewed articles, abstracts, presentations and workshops in the areas of clinical psychology (for example on risk assessment and motivational interviewing) and behavioural medicine (for example designing, implementing and evaluating a number of treatment programs for smoking cessation, and in areas such chronic disease self-management). Dr. Aboussafy is also a Certified Substance Abuse Expert (C-SAE, 2006).
In addition to his private practice, Dr. Aboussafy is currently a consulting psychologist at Orion Health New Westminster, Orion Health Surrey, and at the Vancouver Pain Clinic, providing clinical services to clients in occupational rehabilitation and pain management programs. He is also a consulting psychologist providing assessmesnts and other services for M. Jackson Group Rehabilitation Psychologists in New Westminster, B.C. He is also Adjunct Faculty at the Adler School of Professional Psychology, Vancouver.

Dr. Aboussafy charges the recommended BCPA rate of $160/hour.
Rates for assessments vary depending on complexity of requirement, but are based on the hourly rate(for example: $1600 for a comprehensice psychological and vocational assessment which typically involves ten hours of service).
Evening and Saturday appointments are available.
