Counselling Psychologist

About Me and My Practice

If you find a psychologist who understands your thoughts and feelings, she can help you to understand yourself and your situation in ways that will allow you to function more effectively and/or that will result in the gradual cessation of distressing symptoms.

When I was in my late twenties, my marriage ended and counselling helped me to move on with my life. In my thirties, I went back to university to get a doctorate in counselling psychology. Before that, I had worked at various jobs including computer programming.

I have an office in my home in Point Grey in Vancouver. Having a home office allows me to offer daytime and evening appointments as well as some weekend appointments. Clients appreciate the quiet and privacy of my office location. It is close to two bus routes.

I offer reasonable rates. In addition to coverage by extended health plans, I see clients funded by Crime Victim Assistance Program, by RHAP (Residential Historical Abuse Program) and by ITHA (Inter Tribal Health Authority) as well as several employee assistance plans.

The Kind of Work I Do

I have been providing counselling (sometimes called psychotherapy) for more than twenty years. I utilize cognitive-behavioural therapy and experiential techniques. Some of the problems with which I have helped clients include:

    Anxiety
This is one of the most common problems. Anxiety takes many forms:
    - panic attacks
    - difficulty with social situations
    - fears of crowds, of being alone, of bridges, of flying, and many other fears
    - obsessive thoughts
    - compulsive behaviours
    - physical problems caused or exacerbated by chronic anxiety (sometimes called stress) such
as digestive problems and high blood pressure.

    Depression
Some people know they are depressed. They may have been taking antidepressant medication, sometimes for years. But they want to resolve the cause of their depression rather than just continuing to treat the symptoms with antidepressants.
Other people don't realize they are depressed, perhaps because they are distracting themselves with various addictions like work, alcohol, drugs, eating, gambling, sex, or other compulsive behaviours.

    Couple Counselling
Couples get into habits of responding to one another that are hurtful and frustrating. Counselling can help the partners develop new understandings of one another that allow them to be more intimate and more loving.

    Sexual Abuse
People who have suffered sexual abuse, either as children or as adults, sometimes struggle with the psychological effects of the abuse for many years. It is often very difficult to talk about sexual abuse experiences and yet talking with a skilled listener can be very freeing.

    Eating Disorders
Bingeing, bulimea, anorexia and other eating and body image problems are devastating to sufferers and are increasingly common in our image-conscious society. I've found that problematic eating has a unique meaning for each client and when the client comes to understand exactly what that is for her (or sometimes him), the pressure of the disorder begins to be reduced.
