Dr. Sharon Jeyakumar is a Registered Psychologist, with a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. She provides psychotherapy and counselling services to clients in the Greater Vancouver area. She has assisted clients with a variety of presenting issues, including:

Dr. Jeyakumar welcomes clients of all backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, and lifestyles. She is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and confidential environment for her clients to explore their personal concerns.

Therapeutic Approach:

Dr. Jeyakumar utilizes an integrative therapeutic approach that is tailored to the client's needs, drawing from a variety of theoretical orientations including experiential/gestalt, emotion-focused, cognitive-behavioural, solution-focused, and psychodynamic traditions. She believes in a client-centred and collaborative therapeutic process, in which clients are an active participant in the therapeutic process. She aims to help clients achieve greater well-being and empowerment through increase self-awareness and understanding of their own life experiences. She believes in each client's unique strengths and abilities to discover their inner wisdom, and by drawing upon these, works to help clients develop the tools to cope with life's challenges and create a life that leads to greater satisfaction.

Dr. Jeyakumar believes that an effective working therapeutic relationship between the client and therapist is one of the most important elements in achieving therapeutic success. A supportive and caring therapeutic relationship allows clients to feel safe and comfortable enough to explore personal experiences that can be painful and overwhelming, but ultimately lead to healing, self-empowerment, confidence, and personal transformation. A good fit between therapist and client, and a feeling of comfort, safety, and acceptance is therefore important for a client in selecting a therapist.

About Dr. Jeyakumar:

Dr. Jeyakumar is a Registered Psychologist in the Province of British Columbia (#01801). She received her Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Windsor, and her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia. Dr. Jeyakumar has worked in a variety of clinical settings over the past decade, including a group private practice, university psychological services centre, two outpatient mental health centres, three psychiatric hospitals, a rehabilitation program, and a tertiary assessment and treatment centre for clients with developmental disabilities. Her clients have come from diverse backgrounds and range in age from late adolescent to geriatric. She has also worked with individuals with ongoing health issues, such as chronic pain, disabilities, and brain injury. In addition, she has co-facilitated a psychoeducational group for individuals in emotional crisis as well as co-facilitated a support group for partners, family, and friends of transgendered individuals.

In addition to her private practice, Dr. Jeyakumar works in a group practice providing psychological services to clients suffering from emotional and cognitive difficulties resulting from motor vehicle accidents. She also performs assessments for diagnostic and medical-legal purposes, and has appeared before the law courts to provide expert testimony on MVA-related clinical issues.

    Fees and Contact Information:

    Fees:

    Fees for psychological services are $150 per hour. Fees may be covered through your extended health plans or employee assistance program. Please check with your insurance provider or human resources office to determine the extent of your coverage.

    Dr. Jeyakumar is an approved out-of-network service provider for Value Options, an Employee Assistance Program for the Screen Actors Guild. If you are a member of Value Options, a Single Case Agreement may be arranged to enable coverage for your services.

    Dr. Jeyakumar is also an approved counselling provider with the Crime Victim Assistance Program. If you have been the victim of a crime or are a family member of a crime victim, you may qualify for coverage through the Crime Victim Assistance Program.

    Psychologists' fees are income tax deductible as a medical expense.
