Dr. Ruff completed his PhD at the University of Zurich and 2 years of postdoctoral studies at the University of Oxford and University of Stanford. Thereafter, Dr. Ruff was involved in multiple research studies with traumatic brain injured patients at the University of California San Diego for 10 years. In 1990, Dr. Ruff relocated to San Francisco, where he worked as a clinician with TBI patients in the Department of Rehabilitation at St. Mary's Medical Center. He is currently in private practice and his research interests include test development, studies with TBI populations, and developing cognitive rehabilitation programs. He is on the editorial board of neuropsychological journals, and he has been invited to lecture in both the U.S. and internationally. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and the National Academy of Neuropsychology. Dr. Ruff is a past member of the California Board of Psychology and past President of NAN.
Workshop Description and Course Objectives The clinical involvement of neuropsychologists with individuals who have sustained traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs, has grown substantially in recent decades. Indeed, neuropsychological examinations have become the gold standard for determining to what extent TBI patients suffer from cognitive and emotional residuals. Forensic applications have also been on the rise. In comparison to the advancement of diagnostic applications, less progress has been achieved in the development of efficacious treatments. Moreover, the discipline of neuropsychology remains divided as to their understanding of the Postconcussional Disorder. The aim of the workshop is to present both the latest diagnostic and therapeutic advancements. - The first objective is to gain an understanding of the diagnostic challenges of diagnosing TBI. Since about eighty percent of all TBI are of mild severity, the emphasis will be on providing definitions and diagnostic guidelines for capturing the injury characteristic of mild TBI. - Discipline-based models will be contrasted with a patient-based approach that attempts to more comprehensively capture the long-term consequences of TBI patients or Postconcussional Disorders. - Treatment approaches for cognitive remediation will be introduced that are based on a model of neuroplasticity. - The limits of applying traditional psychotherapy will be examined and modified approaches will be offered that aim to assist those patients are forced to live inside an injured brain. - Guidelines for forensic testimony as either a plaintiff and defense expert will be provided.
