| Sep 24, 2010 Creating a Healthy Future with a Psychobiosocial Model of Care Park Inn and Suites on West Broadway | Presented by Elaine LeVine, PhD, ABMP
Abstract This presentation will focus on the current theoretical aspects of psychopharmacology. Over 100 psychologists in the United States have been prescribing psychotropic medication safely and effectively within the private and public sector for the last 15 years. They work closely with medical colleagues to provide more integrated care through a unique psychobiosocial model, which is built on psychologists unique skills. Through clinical cases and application to current issues in mental health care, the viability of this model in both primary and secondary care will be demonstrated. New guidelines for training adopted by the APA Council in 2009 will also be discussed.
Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to describe at least five elements of the psychobiosocial model of care that are unique to prescribing psychologists. - Through clinical cases, participants will gain practical ideas, clinical pearls, regarding the use of psychotropic medication. - Participants will be able to employ a psychobiosocial model in reviewing issues in the literature. - Participants will gain an appreciation of how the biosocial model can address critical mental health needs globally.

| Nov 26, 2010 Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy for the Prevention of Depressive Relapse University Golf Course | Presenter: Dr. Mark Lau
Please note: this workshop is only open to BCPA Members.
This workshop will be an interactive learning experience combining didactic instruction with experiential exercises to teach the key aspects of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, or MBCT. MBCT is a group intervention integrating CBT for depression with mindfulness meditation to teach formerly depressed patients new skills to help prevent relapse or recurrence. Key themes include experiential learning and the development of an open and acceptant mode of response, in which one intentionally faces behavioral difficulties and affective discomfort. Increased mindfulness allows early detection of relapse-related patterns of negative thinking, feelings, and body sensations, allowing them to be nipped in the bud at a stage when this may be much easier than if such warning signs are not noticed or are ignored. Formulation of specific relapse and recurrence prevention strategies is included in the later stages of treatment. MBCT is now included in the National Institute of Clinical Excellence Guidelines in the United Kingdom for prevention of recurrent depression.
Learning Objectives - Understanding the link between the development of MBCT and a model of cognitive vulnerability to depression - Learning the structure of MBCT and the core therapeutic tasks that accompany each of the group sessions - Learning three forms of mindfulness training utilized in MBCT. | |
