Topic: "Secrets" that Therapists Keep

Ethical issues are raised when a therapist has highly relevant information that their client does not know about regarding a significant other in the client's life (and the significant other is not also a client).

  • How do you decide whether some information is important to share?
  • Is it sometimes unethical to not share relevant information?
  • How do you deal with your feelings as a therapist when you cannot share a "secret" (e.g. knowledge that your client's spouse is having an affair?)

These questions will be explored throughout this Ethics Salon.

Readings: No assigned readings.

Restrictions: Attendance is restricted to registrants of the College of Psychologists of BC.

About the Ethics Salons

  • Underground Parking is available at $5 flat rate (located at the west side of the building, Lot#68).
  • The Salon is an informed discussion of ideas, theories, dilemmas, and ways to evolve and become more mindful in the pursuit of an ethical practice of psychology. The setting is informal, with guided discussion from the facilitator.
  • Salon registrants will not be receiving a Continuing Education certificate from the BCPA office after registering for and attending the Ethics Salons. You may keep track and submit your hours to the College for credit.
  • Registrants are responsible for accessing and printing the paper that will be discussed during each Salon. A link to the discussion materials will be provided in an e-mail reminder that you will be receiving few days before the Salon you registered for.
  • Registrants are responsible for reviewing the Ethics Salon Guidelines before attending each Salon.

Cancellation Policy
All registrations are final. Registrations are non-transferable, and there will be no refunds. However, if you realize that you will not be able to attend the Salon, please let us know at least two business days in advance to allow psychologists on the waiting list to attend.

By Registering for this event, you understand and agree that your name will be submitted to the College of Psychologists of BC by all those seeking Continuing Education Credits for attendance at this event.
