About the Workshop:
Cultural competence is important for quality of care and to meet professional guidelines of care in an increasingly diverse population. This workshop will focus on two tools for culturally competent care relevant for psychologists in the DSM-5 of the American Psychiatric Association: the Outline for Cultural Formulation and the Cultural Formulation Interview. Participants will learn about cultural identity, cultural concepts of distress, cultural stressors and support, cultural features of the relationship between the clinician and individual, and how understanding these issues can improve differential diagnosis and treatment planning. A video case and two local cases in British Columbia by participants will be presented to illustrate how the Outline for Cultural Formulation can be implemented for improved quality of care.
Learning Objectives:
- Define the elements of cultural competence and its rationale for quality of care and meeting professional guidelines of care with diverse populations.
- Define the 5 parts of the DSM-5 Outline for Cultural Formulation and apply it in clinical assessment and treatment planning of patients.
- Cite the 16 questions of the DSM-5 Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI) and apply it in clinical assessment of patients.
- Describe the 12 Supplementary Modules of the CFI and apply them when appropriate in the clinical assessment of patients.Understand the basic principles of caregiving for developing attachment security.
