About the Workshop:

Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) is an outcome-focused approach that amplifies clients’ self-identified strengths and problem-solving behaviors. The solution-focused approach optimizes the common factors in psychotherapy. While often delivered as a stand-alone model, SFBT can be integrated into most approaches to therapy to increase clients’ sense of personal agency and make therapy briefer and more efficient. It has been applied with difficult client problems such as eating disorders, intimate partner violence, child protection concerns, substance misuse, chronic and persistent mental illness, etc.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe three operating principles of SFBT (listening for openings, describing and amplifying change, and matching client receptivity).
  2. Apply the operating principles to optimize common factors.
  3. Demonstrate and solution-focused interviewing skills and sequences.
  4. Based on the various approaches to psychotherapy integration, describe how solution-focused interviewing skills can be integrated into a diversity of psychotherapy approaches.
  5. Apply SFBT’s conceptions of the therapeutic relationship to promote greater treatment engagement and increase treatment compliance.
  6. Describe the research base of SFBT.
