Membership Committee

The Membership Committee is co-chaired by Dr. Michael Sheppar and Ms. Zarina Giannone. Members of this Committee are responsible for the recruitment and retention of members, soliciting member input through surveys and focus groups, and reviewing and creating new member services. Ms. Giannone, the first doctoral student to chair this Committee, brings a strong commitment to enhancing doctoral psychology students’ participation in the BCPA. As such, this Committee endeavours to create new pathways for students to champion the future of psychology in BC.

Current member benefits include, but are not limited to:

  • Exclusive discounts on BCPA-sponsored Continuing Education (CE) events, as well as those hosted by the Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Washington State Psychological Associations
  • Free yearly subscription to our quarterly publication, the BC Psychologist
  • Access to our online resources
  • Professional development and networking at CE events and through volunteer committees or Board opportunities
  • Exclusive discounts on liability insurance (with average savings of 77% over non-discounted rates) and office insurance plans
  • Access to BCPA health, dental, and disability insurance plans
  • Networking with fellow colleagues through our member-only e-mail forum
  • The opportunity to help yourself and other psychologists advocate for the profession in British Columbia - you can help by getting involved with any of our committees, volunteering at our events or becoming a contributor for the BC Psychologist

The Membership Committee is also responsible for monitoring and improving the Referral Service. In addition to all of the benefits listed above, Registered Psychologists can become part of the BCPA Referral Service for an additional fee. The Referral Service is accessed by members of the public, both by phone and through the web, and it allows members to be listed in a public directory that can be searched by location, language, therapy methods and other criteria. As a benefit of joining the Referral Service, members are allowed to provide a link to an existing website, or they can create a free web profile hosted by us. The Referral Service is advertised to other service providers and heavily promoted to the public during Psychology Month (February of every year).
