Current Volunteer Opportunities

There are many different ways to get involved as a BCPA volunteer!

Join One or More of Our Committees

The members who are part of BCPA committees are all volunteers. The staff is responsible for offering logistical support to these Committees. However, it is the committees’ and task forces’ mandate to organize new initiatives with the support and direction of the Board of Directors.

Committee members make an effort to participate at meetings in person or through teleconferencing. All committees have a BCPA director as one of their members, in the role of Board liaison or chair.

If you are interested in joining one of our committees, please fill in this form. If you want to find out more about our committees and task forces, check out our information page.

The BC Psychologist

The BC Psychologist is the quarterly publication of the BC Psychological Association. The publication is distributed to members of the Association who live throughout BC, and every July it is also mailed to all new registrants of the College of Psychologists of BC.

Anyone can contribute to the BC Psychologist, but we particularly value submissions by Registered Psychologists or psychology researchers. We also value perspectives from other service providers. Preference is given to writers from BC and to those who haven’t been published before in the BC Psychologist. Submissions should be original, and they must acknowledge all sources and be written according to APA style guidelines.

You will work with our Assistant Editor and our Executive Editor, and the final submission will be subject to the final approval of our Editor in Chief. We will add you to our list of writers, and you will receive periodic reminders about upcoming deadlines, suggestions of books or papers to comment on, and more.

If you are interested in this opportunity to contribute to the discourse on psychology in BC, please fill in this form, and check out the BC Psychologist’s page.

Ethics Salon Facilitator

The BC Psychological Association launched the Ethics Salons in Victoria in September 2009. Currently there are salons offered in Surrey, Victoria and at several locations in Vancouver. The Salons are chaired by a BCPA member.

We are looking for individuals in various locations who would like to take on the role of facilitator for a Salon. The Ethics Salon facilitator will be responsible for picking a paper/article regarding the subject of ethics in the practice of psychology to be discussed at the Salon, and for attending Ethics Salons in his/her area to lead the discussions. The facilitator will have to be in contact with the BCPA Office and provide all reading information in advance, as well as relay any problems or suggestions arising from the Salons.

The facilitator will not be responsible for registering attendees, confirming venues, or notifying attendees – all registrations and member communications will be run through the BCPA Office. However, you will be asked to ensure everyone signs into the Salon, and to forward the sign-in sheets to the BCPA office.

By keeping the group size to a maximum of 12, and requiring pre-registration, we are able to maintain a dynamic conversation-oriented event.  We are hoping to organize several Salons in different parts of British Columbia to give all of you a chance to participate. However, we need volunteers to be willing to lead the discussion for the Salon(s) in your area.

Salons are chaired exclusively by BCPA member volunteers, not by the BCPA staff. If there is no Salon facilitator in your area, you will not be able to attend an Ethics Salon. Maybe you should think about volunteering! Please fill in this form if you would like to become an Ethics Salon facilitator in your area.

Interning with Us

To facilitate a unique opportunity for students to contribute to the work of The British Columbia Psychological Association (BCPA) while attending an accredited post-secondary institution. The intern will help staff with administrative duties and assist with office tasks. Tasks include responding to BCPA members, archiving documents, assisting in creating financial reports, faxing and filing documents, and updating membership information on the online database. Interns will attend board meetings, and committee meetings and assist in workshop preparation. Interns will learn to prepare agendas for meetings and take meeting minutes. This is an unpaid internship to develop and expand professional skills.

Unfortunately, we are not accepting interns at this time. Please check again later.

Writing for Our Blog

BCPA hosts a blog promoting advances in psychological science and practices through blog articles written in plain English, and accessible to anyone who has an interest in psychology and mental health.

All articles written for our blog go through an editing and moderation process that ensures that only high-quality articles are published. Therefore, as a writer, you will be assisted by our team of volunteer editors and moderators.
